Angel Island
Location Description
Angel Island is the largest Island in the
San Francisco Bay, and a kayak tour there promises adventure
and history. Steep rocky cliffs blend into forested hillsides,
and sandy beaches making excellent kayak landing spots.
World War I & II era buildings dot the landscape and
are game for post-lunch explorations. Angel Island, originally
inhabited by the Miwok Indians, first became home for military
installations during the civil war. Military use ended after
World War II, but the buildings remain for us to contemplate
what it was like in the “olden days”. Lunch is
often taken at the West Garrison, a civil war era assemblage
of buildings, where the annual Living History Day “The
Battle for Angel Island” takes place in June. Parts
of the festivities include the firing of an old cannon and
a mock invasion by sea. Your kayak crossing begins in Sausalito,
where you paddle among anchored sailing vessels, and
then head into Raccoon Strait, for a real open bay experience.
Views of downtown San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge
are all the more thrilling from the unique perspective
in your kayak. Large, stable double
sea kayaks partner with your experienced guides to ensure
safety for everyone, including inexperienced paddlers. For
the overnight kayak tour, we use scenic kayak campsites near
the beach.
