Introduction to Paddling

Discover what kayaking is all about

Are you curious about kayaking and want to learn more? We'll show you that kayaking is an activity that everyone can enjoy. Whether it is recreational, day touring, or open coast paddling, this class will help you discover what's right for you. In calm protected waters you will learn about kayak features and selection, paddling strokes, safety, and equipment. This class is great for beginners and those interested in paddling a full range of kayaks while learning the differences between the many choices. Come prepared for a fun and educational experience!

This class qualifies you for a $50 credit on a new regular priced kayak purchase. The credit must be used within 2 weeks of the class and may not be combined with other offers.

Stevens Creek Reservoir, Cupertino: 10am-2pm
Outback Adventures Store, Larkspur: Typically 11am-3pm, but may vary due to tides. Please contact us for exact times.

Prerequisites:

No previous experience required

What to Bring:

  • Wear synthetic clothing rather than cotton (swimsuit, shirt, shorts, lightweight pants, jacket)
  • Water
  • Snacks
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Sun hat and a warm cap
  • Retainer straps for glasses
  • Booties, water shoes, or sport sandals
  • Consider bringing a tip for your instructor / guide for exceptional service

Outback Adventures Provides:

  • Kayaks
  • Paddles
  • PFDs (lifejackets)
  • Spray skirts
  • Paddling Jackets (if necessary)
  • Wetsuits (if necessary)
  • Safety equipment
  • Experienced, friendly instructors / guides

Directions to Stevens Creek Reservoir in Cupertino

Directions from San Jose or San Francisco using 280

From San Jose take 280 North or from San Francisco take 280 South and exit at Foothill Boulevard. Go South on Foothill Boulevard towards the hills. Foothill Boulevard will eventually change names to Stevens Canyon Road. Wind your way up the hill for a short distance until Stevens Creek Reservoir becomes visible on your left. Turn left into the parking lot where parking passes may be purchased for $6.

Directions from South San Jose using 85

From South San Jose take 85 North and take the Stevens Creek Boulevard exit and turn left at the light heading West on Stevens Creek Boulevard. Turn left on Foothill Boulevard heading South towards the hills. Foothill Boulevard will eventually change names to Stevens Canyon Road. Wind your way up the hill for a short distance until Stevens Creek Reservoir becomes visible on your left. Turn left into the parking lot where parking passes may be purchased for $6.

Meeting Place: Meet next to the large beige storage container nearest to the boat ramp.

Directions to Larkspur and the Corte Madera Creek

Directions to the Marin Store From San Francisco

Take Highway 101 North, and cross the Golden Gate Bridge. At the first sign for the Richmond Bridge/Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, exit 101 and bear right onto Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. Make an immediate right turn into the first driveway and parking. If you miss the first driveway, try the second smaller one.

Directions to the Marin Store from Santa Rosa

Take 101 South and take the Sir Francis Drake Boulevard exit and turn left at the light. Drive under the highway 101 overpass then turn into the first shopping center on your right. When changing lanes towards the shopping center, be very careful since there is oncoming traffic exiting the highway in that lane. There are two driveways to our store and one additional one in a neighboring property. If you miss the first driveway, try the second smaller one.

Directions to the Marin Store from Richmond

Take 580 West towards San Rafael. Once you cross the Richmond / San Rafael Bridge, take the exit for Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. Drive past the Larkspur Ferry Terminal on your left and soon after notice Outback Adventures on the same side. Pass up Outback Adventures and continue on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard under the highway 101 overpass and make a u-turn at Eliseo Drive. Go back under the highway 101 overpass and turn into the first shopping center on your right. When changing lanes towards the shopping center, be very careful since there is oncoming traffic exiting the highway. There are two driveways to our store and one additional one in a neighboring property. If you miss the first driveway, try the second smaller one.

Meeting Place: Depending on the trip and class start time, meet your guide/instructor either inside our store or behind the main parking lot by the water.
