who developed and wrote PADI's Kayak Diving Specialty Course.
This comprehensive course includes a classroom session, the
Kayak Diving Student's Manual, two ocean dives in the Monterey

Quote from the
Instructor
"A
few years ago I decided I wanted to own a boat so I could
get out to
some
of the
more
remote
and out-of-the-way dive
sites. I had intended to buy a small boat with an outboard
engine but was rather shocked when I looked into prices.
Even used boats and engines were very expensive! Then one
day I saw a couple of divers gliding on their gear-laden
kayaks through the kelp beds of Northern California. They
slid over the kelp and in ten minutes were out to dive spots
that were well beyond swimming range. "That's the way
to go!" I said to myself, and a month later I owned
a kayak."
Kayaks have many advantages over power
boats:
- Low cost:
A fully equipped dive kayak can be had for less than
the cost of even the smallest
outboard engines.
Kayaks
have no fuel or licensing costs.
- Ease of maintenance: Rinse
the kayak off with fresh water at the end of the day
and
forget about it until next
time.
- Ease of transportation: Most
vehicles can easily carry a kayak on their roofs; no need
for a boat trailer and
the
license fees that go with it.
- Ease of launching: Power
boats need launch ramps, which limits where they can start
voyages from. Kayaks can
be launched from virtually anywhere that you can walk
to the water's
edge.
- Low environmental
impact: Kayaks are quiet and clean;
they introduce no pollutants into the water or air.
- Safety:
Your kayak is a convenient place to get out of the water
should
something go wrong during a dive.
