 Introduction
to the Surf Zone
Half Moon Bay
Trip Details
Course Desription: A
must for coastal touring, kayak surfing, and open water paddling.
Gain confidence and the skills necessary for
entering and exiting the surf zone. Learn launch and landing
skills and how to handle breaking waves. Topics covered
include side surfing, bracing, wave dynamics, and surf
zone safety and etiquette. This class is so much fun, many
choose to take it more than once. If time and conditions
allow, we will review open water reentry.
What to Bring:
- Wear synthetic, wool, or silk clothing
(swimsuit, shirt, shorts, jacket, & warm cap) rather
than cotton
- Water
- Food (sandwich, fruit, energy bars)
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- Sun Hat
- Retainer straps for glasses
- Booties, water shoes, or sport sandals
- Consider bringing a tip for your instructor
/ guide for exceptional service

Directions from San
Jose: Pillar Point Harbor is located
seven miles north of Half Moon Bay. From San Jose drive highway
280 North and exit Highway 92 West to Half Moon Bay. Take
Highway 1 North to Granada, then continue north to a signal
light at Capistrano Rd. and turn left. Follow Capistrano
Road along the harbor waterfront. Turn Left on Prospect.
At the stop sign, turn left then quickly turn right on Princeton.
Turn left on West Point Ave. and find parking. Meet on the
beach next to the pier.
Directions
from San Francisco: Drive south on Highway 1
towards half Moon Bay. Two miles south of Moss Beach,
turn right
at Capistrano Road. Follow Capistrano Road along the harbor
waterfront. Turn Left on Prospect. At the stop sign, turn
left then quickly turn right then quickly turn right on
Princeton. Turn left on West Point Ave. and find parking.
Meet on the
beach next to the pier.
