Introduction to Rock Climbing

A perfect way to learn how to rock climb outdoors - Level 1

This course will give you an exciting introduction to the world of outdoor rock climbing. You will learn about the essential safety equipment that makes roped climbing possible and gain an understanding on how top-rope climbing systems work. We will teach you how to properly belay with a lightweight and versatile passive belay device that is generally not used at indoor climbing gyms. You will also practice tying essential rock climbing knots, learn rock climbing vocabulary and communication, and get introduced to climbing movement techniques.

• Consider bringing a tip for your instructor / guide for exceptional service

Directions to Castle Rock State Park From San Jose

From San Jose, take Highway 85 North to the Saratoga Avenue exit. Turn left (Southwest) and follow the road through downtown Saratoga. Once in downtown Saratoga you will be on Highway 9. Continue on Highway 9 until you reach the stop sign at the summit. Turn left onto Skyline Boulevard. Follow the road for a few miles. The park will be located on your right. If you park in the main parking lot you will have to pay a $6 day use fee. Please allow yourself at least 30 minutes to get to Castle Rock after exiting Highway 85. Last food and gas is located in downtown Saratoga.

Directions to Mount Tamalpais from San Francisco

From San Francisco, go North on 101. When you are just North of Sausalito, take the Highway 1 North exit towards Stinson Beach. Stay on Highway 1 through town and continue for a little over three miles. Turn right onto Panoramic Highway and continue up the road towards Mt. Tamapais. Follow the signs toward the East Summit and continue all the way to the end of the road where you will find a large parking lot. Please be prepared for the parking fee of $8. There is a rest room, refreshment stand, and drinking water. Please allow yourself at least 30 minutes to get to Mount Tamalpais after exiting Highway 101. Last food and gas is located in Tamalpais Valley Junction, just off Highway 101.

Meeting Place: Meet at the Mount Tamalpais East Peak parking area next to the restrooms.
